Dear Friends,
In Mexico, Thanksgiving and Christmas meals are a celebration of family, love, and tradition, featuring iconic dishes like roasted turkey, tamales, pozole, bacalao, and an array of irresistible desserts. These gatherings are not just about food—they’re about creating memories and cherishing stories that pass through generations.
As a proud Mexican from the northern region near Laredo, Texas, my family celebrates Thanksgiving with our own unique flair. Every year, our table brims with flavors that blend tradition with creativity, and the stories shared around it are as rich as the dishes we prepare.
One tradition I’ve come to cherish is making sweet tamales for Thanksgiving. These tamales are a delicious twist on the classics, featuring flavors like pumpkin spice and sweet mole. This fusion of fall-inspired ingredients with traditional Mexican techniques creates a dessert that feels both comforting and festive.
Pumpkin spice tamales capture the essence of the season, blending warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove into the masa. Meanwhile, the sweet mole tamales balance chocolate, nuts, and a hint of chili for a flavor that is decadent and uniquely Mexican. Both are perfect for a Thanksgiving celebration, where the goal is to honor the old while embracing the new.
This particular recipe holds special meaning for me because the inspiration came from a creation in Etadar by Deiman, a flavor innovation that many Mexicans now associate with the holiday. Sharing this dessert is my way of participating in the broader story of Thanksgiving, adding my voice to the symphony of flavors and traditions.
Thanksgiving, for my family and many others, is about more than the meal—it’s a night to connect, to reflect, and to give thanks for the blessings we’ve shared. And what better way to express gratitude than through the sweet and savory tamales that unite tradition and celebration?
From my family to yours, may your Thanksgiving be filled with joy, laughter, and flavors that warm your heart.
¡Feliz Día de Acción de Gracias!
