Brenda Hughes has dedicated her life to turning compassion into action. Her journey began with personal experiences of poverty, hardship, and hunger, experiences that shaped her understanding of the challenges faced by countless families. At just nine years old, Brenda made a promise to her mother that she would make a difference in the world. Decades later, that promise continues to guide her work as the founder of Jackson Michigan Giving Back to the Community.
Founded in 1991, the organization has grown from a personal commitment to help individuals in need into a community-focused initiative providing food, clothing, hygiene products, baby essentials, and other necessities to families facing difficult circumstances. Through compassion, dignity, and a powerful belief that no one should feel ashamed to ask for help, Brenda has helped create a safe and welcoming space for people across the community.
Her story is a powerful reminder that adversity can become purpose, that one act of kindness can create hope, and that meaningful change often begins with a simple decision to help another person.
A Promise Made at Nine Years Old
We started the interview by asking, “Your journey began with significant personal hardship, and at the age of nine you made a promise to your mother that you would make a difference in the world. How did that promise shape the person and community leader you became?”
Brenda Hughes replied, “That promise has stayed with me throughout my entire life. As a child, I watched my mother face incredible challenges. She was a single parent raising five children while carrying the pain of losing her own mother. I saw what it meant to struggle, to go without, and to keep moving forward even when life was difficult. Those experiences gave me a deep understanding of what many families face every day.
When I was nine years old, I promised my mother that I would make a difference in this world. At that age, I did not know exactly what that difference would look like, but I knew that I wanted my life to have a purpose beyond myself. My faith, resilience, and the lessons my mother taught me became the foundation of everything I have done.
I believe that sometimes our greatest pain can become our greatest purpose. I experienced poverty and hardship personally, so when someone comes to us needing food, clothing, diapers, hygiene products, or simply someone who will listen, I understand that their need is real. I do not see statistics when people walk through our doors. I see human beings, families, and individuals who deserve dignity, respect, and hope.
That promise I made as a little girl continues to guide me today. Every family we help reminds me why I started. I always want people to know that darkness does not have to have the final word. With compassion, faith, and people working together, we can create light in someone’s life and help them believe that tomorrow can be better.”
From Personal Struggle to a Mission for the Entire Community
The Worlds Times: “You transformed your personal experiences with poverty and hunger into Jackson Michigan Giving Back to the Community. What inspired you to move from wanting to help people individually to building an organization that serves an entire community?”
Brenda replied, “My journey into community service began with simply wanting to help wherever I could. I volunteered at the Interfaith Shelter, and those experiences opened my eyes even further to the needs around me. I met people who were struggling with hunger, homelessness, and basic necessities, and I realized that there were many people in our community who needed support but did not always know where to turn.
For me, helping others was never just about giving someone a bag of food or an item of clothing. It was about letting them know that they mattered. I understood what it felt like to struggle, and I knew that when people are going through difficult times, they need more than resources. They also need compassion and someone who treats them with dignity.
Over time, I began collecting donations and helping people directly. What started with a desire to give food and clothing to those in need grew into something much larger. Eventually, that commitment became Jackson Michigan Giving Back to the Community, founded in 1991 with the vision of creating a safe haven for people who needed assistance.
Building an organization allowed us to reach more people and respond to a wider range of needs. Today, our work includes essential resources such as food, hygiene products, clothing, baby supplies, and other support services. Our mission is simple but powerful: no individual or family should have to face hunger or go without life’s basic necessities.
The growth of this organization has shown me what is possible when a community comes together. I may have started with a personal promise and a personal mission, but the work has become something much bigger than me. It belongs to every volunteer, donor, supporter, and community member who believes that helping one another can change lives.”
Providing Basic Needs with Dignity and Compassion
The Worlds Times: “Jackson Michigan Giving Back to the Community provides a wide range of support, from food and hygiene products to clothing and baby essentials. Why is it so important to you that your organization addresses basic needs in such a comprehensive and compassionate way?”
Brenda replied, “I believe that a need has no face. Hardship can affect anyone. It can affect a parent who is working but still cannot afford enough groceries, a senior citizen living on a limited income, a young family struggling to buy diapers, or someone facing an unexpected crisis.
Because I have personally experienced hardship, I understand that basic needs are connected to dignity. When someone does not have enough food, clean clothing, toiletries, or necessities for their children, it affects every part of their life. Sometimes people only need a little support to help them get through a difficult period, and that support can make a tremendous difference.
That is why we work to provide different kinds of assistance. Our services include basic household and hygiene items, baby essentials, clothing, and food distribution. We want people to know that when they come to Jackson Michigan Giving Back to the Community, they are entering a place where they will be welcomed and treated with respect.
One of the most important principles for me is that this is a no-judgment environment. People should never feel ashamed for asking for help. Many of us are only one difficult situation away from needing assistance ourselves.
I want our organization to be a place where people feel safe, supported, and understood. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can give someone is not only a resource, but the feeling that they have not been forgotten. That is what I hope we provide every day. We are not simply distributing necessities. We are building relationships, restoring hope, and reminding people that they are part of a community that cares.”
Bringing the Community Together Through Support and Connection
The Worlds Times: “You organize free community events that bring people together and provide support to children and families. What role do these events play in building a stronger and more compassionate community?”
Brenda replied, “Community events are extremely important because they bring people together around something positive. Many families face challenges quietly. They may be worried about food, school supplies, clothing, or other necessities, but they often feel isolated in those struggles. Community events create opportunities for people to come together, receive support, connect with others, and feel that they belong.
For me, it is especially important that children are not left behind. Every child deserves the opportunity to feel supported, encouraged, and valued. Whether we are helping with food, clothing, school-related needs, or holiday support, the goal is to make sure families know that their community cares about their children and their future.
These events also bring volunteers, businesses, donors, and residents together. That is where real community strength comes from. One person may not be able to solve every problem, but when many people contribute their time, resources, and compassion, we can accomplish something extraordinary.
I also believe that mental and emotional well-being are connected to community support. When people feel isolated, hopelessness can grow. When they feel welcomed and included, it can give them renewed strength. Sometimes a smile, a conversation, or simply being in an environment where people care can have a powerful impact.
My dream is for Jackson to continue becoming a community where people look out for one another. We all have something we can give. It may be money, time, food, clothing, skills, or simply kindness. When we understand that we are stronger together, we can create a community where more people have the opportunity not just to survive, but to truly thrive.”
A Vision of Hope, Growth, and Lasting Change
The Worlds Times: “After decades of serving others, what is your vision for the future of Jackson Michigan Giving Back to the Community, and what message would you like to share with people who want to make a difference in the lives of others?”
Brenda replied, “My vision is to continue growing our ability to serve people while never losing the personal connection that makes this work so meaningful. The needs in our communities are real, and they continue to change. Families are dealing with rising costs, food insecurity, and many other challenges. I want Jackson Michigan Giving Back to the Community to continue being a place where people can find help, hope, and a sense of belonging.
I also want to see more people become involved in serving their communities. You do not have to start a large organization to make a difference. You can begin by helping one person. Check on a neighbor. Volunteer. Donate what you can. Listen to someone who is going through a difficult time. Every act of kindness matters.
My own life has taught me that we should never allow our difficult experiences to define us in a negative way. We can take what we have been through and use it to understand others more deeply. We can transform pain into purpose.
I am incredibly grateful for everyone who has supported this journey. Every volunteer, donor, partner, and community member has played a role in helping us serve others. This work is a reminder that compassion is powerful when it becomes action.
My message to anyone who wants to make a difference is simple: do not underestimate what you can do. You may feel that your contribution is small, but to someone in need, it can mean everything. Keep believing, keep serving, and keep showing up for others.
I made a promise to my mother when I was nine years old that I would make a difference. My journey has taught me that making a difference does not always mean changing the entire world at once. Sometimes it means changing one person’s day, helping one family through a difficult moment, and giving one child a reason to smile. If we all continue doing that, one family at a time, together we truly can create lasting change.”
Turning Compassion into Action
Brenda Hughes’ journey demonstrates the extraordinary impact that can emerge when personal hardship is transformed into a lifelong commitment to serving others. What began as a promise made by a nine-year-old girl has grown into decades of compassion, community leadership, and meaningful support for individuals and families in need.
Through Jackson Michigan Giving Back to the Community, Brenda continues to champion a simple but powerful belief: every person deserves dignity, hope, and the reassurance that they have not been forgotten. Her work is not only about providing food, clothing, hygiene products, or baby essentials. It is about creating connections, strengthening communities, and reminding people that kindness can change lives.
Her message remains an inspiration to anyone who believes they may be only one person with only a small contribution to offer. Brenda Hughes proves that lasting change often begins exactly there, with one person choosing to care, one family receiving support, and one act of compassion becoming the beginning of something much greater.
