The horror movie The Conjuring: Last Rites ruled the box office this weekend, earning about $83 million, according to early reports. This is the biggest opening for a horror movie in 2025 and marks Warner Bros.’ seventh straight hit.
Key Points
-
Warner Bros. had some box office failures earlier this year, like Mickey 17 and The Alto Knights. But the new Conjuring movie continues the studio’s winning streak, following other big openers like Minecraft, The Accountant 2, Final Destination: Bloodlines, F1, Superman, and Weapons.
-
This is the most successful opening weekend of the Conjuring series, beating the 2018 spinoff The Nun, which made $53.8 million in its first weekend.
-
The Conjuring: Last Rites is now the third-biggest horror opening in U.S. box office history—behind only It (2017, $123 million) and It: Chapter 2 (2019, $91 million).
How Does It Compare to Other Horror Movies in 2025?
Even though box office sales have been weaker this year, horror films have done surprisingly well.
-
Sinners (April), directed by Ryan Coogler, opened with $48 million and earned $366.6 million total.
-
Final Destination: Bloodlines (May) opened with $51.6 million and made $307.4 million worldwide.
-
Weapons (August) opened with $43.5 million and has already earned $139.1 million domestically.
With an $83 million start, The Conjuring: Last Rites beat them all in opening weekend sales. The big question now is whether it can keep this momentum and end up as the year’s top horror film overall.
Surprising Fact
The second biggest movie at the box office this weekend wasn’t a new film or a big hit from before—it was Hamilton. This is the filmed version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s famous Broadway musical, first released on Disney+ in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The show was actually recorded in 2016 with the original Broadway cast.
Earlier this year, Disney announced that Hamilton would return to theaters for a short run, including a new introduction and cast interviews. Over the weekend, it made about $9.8 million in 1,825 theaters, according to Variety.
This surprise success comes after another limited release: Netflix’s animated musical Kpop Demon Hunters. That film, first released on streaming in June, hit theaters for just one weekend and made $18 million.
