President Donald Trump announced that the United States is giving Saudi Arabia the status of a “major non-NATO ally.” He made this announcement during a dinner with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House.
On Tuesday, Trump said that this move is meant to strengthen military ties between the US and Saudi Arabia. The announcement was made during a formal black-tie dinner with the Crown Prince.
“Tonight, I’m happy to say that we are taking our military cooperation to a higher level by officially giving Saudi Arabia the status of a major non-NATO ally,” Trump said.
This new status is mostly symbolic but still provides some benefits in defence and security cooperation, according to AP. Trump also said earlier that Saudi Arabia plans to buy F-35 stealth fighter jets as part of a larger US security deal.
During a dinner at the White House, Trump said, “I’m happy to announce that we are increasing our military cooperation by officially naming Saudi Arabia as a major non-NATO ally. This is very important for them.”
Trump’s announcement came after the Saudi crown prince said his country would increase its investments in the United States from about $600 billion to almost $1 trillion.
“Today is a special day. We believe the future of economic cooperation between Saudi Arabia and America is big and full of opportunities. We have signed many agreements that will help grow our relationship in many areas,” the crown prince said at the dinner.
Several other countries are also major non-NATO allies, such as Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Japan, and New Zealand. This title does not give the same security protections that NATO members receive under Article 5, but it does change how the U.S. military works with these countries, according to the U.S. State Department.
