Shane Tamura: What We Know So Far
Tamura had an expired private investigator license.
He used to play football at Granada Hills, as shown in a video from 2015. In that video, he talks excitedly about winning a game.
Recently, Tamura worked as a security guard at a casino in Las Vegas.
What the Police Found
Police recovered Tamura’s gun, an AR-15 style rifle, which had blood on it.
A car with Nevada license plates, registered to Tamura, was found at the scene. Inside, police found a rifle case with bullets, a loaded revolver, magazines, a backpack, and medicine prescribed to Tamura. The bomb squad searched the car and found no explosives.
Tamura’s car had traveled across the country, passing through Colorado on July 26 and through Columbia, New Jersey, as recently as 4:24 p.m. on Monday. It later entered New York City.
According to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Tamura had a known history of mental health problems.
So far, no criminal record has been found. The reason for the attack is still being investigated.
What Happened in the Manhattan Shooting
A man with a long rifle and wearing a bulletproof vest entered a 44-story office building in Manhattan. The building is near Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Center, and the Museum of Modern Art.
Police say the man first shot a New York Police Department officer, then a woman hiding behind a pillar. He then shot a security guard hiding behind a desk. Another man was also shot in the lobby.
The gunman then took the elevator to the 33rd floor, where Rudin Management’s office is located. He walked through the floor, firing shots. One person was hit and died. After that, he walked down the hallway and shot himself in the chest.
In total, he shot five people. Four of them died, including the NYPD officer named Islam. The three other victims were two men and one woman. One man is in critical condition.
After the shooting, Tamura locked himself inside and was later found dead on the 33rd floor from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Commissioner Tisch said, “The situation is now under control and the only shooter is dead.”
