Season 4 of The Witcher, which replaces Henry Cavill with Liam Hemsworth, is getting a lot of negative reviews from both critics and viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

Henry Cavill played Geralt of Rivia, the main character, for the first three seasons of the popular Netflix series (2019–2023). In 2022, Cavill surprised fans by announcing on Instagram that Season 3 would be his last.

He wrote, “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been full of monsters and adventures, but I’ll be putting down my medallion and swords for Season 4. The amazing Liam Hemsworth will take over as the White Wolf. I’m grateful for my time as Geralt and excited to see Liam’s version of this complex character.”

However, judging by the reviews, many fans aren’t happy with Hemsworth’s take on Geralt.

All eight episodes of Season 4 were released on Netflix on Thursday. So far, critics on Rotten Tomatoes have given it a low 53% “rotten” score from 17 reviews, while viewers have rated it just 19% based on more than 100 ratings.

For comparison:

  • Season 1 – 68% from critics, 88% from audiences

  • Season 2 – 95% from critics, 54% from audiences

  • Season 3 – 79% from critics, 20% from audiences

The official critics’ and audience summaries for Season 4 are still not available, but early signs show that this new chapter of The Witcher isn’t winning over many fans.

What Are Critics Saying About ‘The Witcher’ Season 4?

Liam Hemsworth joins The Witcher Season 4 as Geralt, alongside Anya Chalotra as Yennefer and Freya Allan as Ciri.

The official story summary says that after the big events of Season 3, Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri are separated by war and danger. As they follow different paths, they meet new allies who may help them reunite again.

Critics have mixed feelings about the new season:

  • Aramide Tinubu (Variety) gave a positive (“fresh”) review, saying Season 4 is “sharper, less confusing, and full of action and exciting characters.”

  • Ed Power (The Daily Telegraph) also liked it, calling Hemsworth’s performance “quietly ridiculous but fitting” for a fantasy show that’s fun and a bit silly.

  • Sarah Dempster (The Guardian) disagreed, giving a negative (“rotten”) review. She said Hemsworth’s Geralt lacks the charm of Henry Cavill’s version, comparing him to “a bollard in a wig.”

  • Chase Hutchinson (The Wrap) also criticized the season, saying that while Cavill made the role powerful and funny, Hemsworth “weighs down the entire experience.”

All four seasons of The Witcher are rated TV-MA and available to stream on Netflix.
