An update from India
On April 22, 2025, a tragic terrorist attack took place in the beautiful tourist areas of Pahalgam and Baisaran Valley in Jammu and Kashmir. Gunmen opened fire on a group of tourists visiting the scenic Baisaran meadow, a popular destination known for its natural beauty. Sadly, at least 26 people lost their lives, and many others were injured.
The attack happened around 1:00 PM in the afternoon. Baisaran is located about five kilometers from the main town of Pahalgam and can only be reached on foot or by riding a pony. Because of this, it was difficult for help to reach quickly. People nearby, including local residents and security forces, rushed to help the injured and carry them to the nearest hospital.
A militant group called The Resistance Front (TRF) has claimed responsibility for the attack. They are known for opposing Indian rule in the region. This is one of the worst attacks on civilians in Kashmir in recent years. Most of the victims were Indian tourists who had come to enjoy the peaceful mountain surroundings.
Leaders across India have condemned the attack. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow and said that the country will not tolerate terrorism. Home Minister Amit Shah traveled to Srinagar to take control of the situation and offer support to the affected families.
This incident is especially shocking because attacks on tourists in Kashmir are rare. In recent years, the region had seen a drop in violence and more visitors had started returning. This attack has created fear and sadness, not only in Jammu and Kashmir but across the country.
Security forces have launched a search operation to find the attackers. The government has promised strict action and support for the victims and their families.
This terrible event has once again reminded everyone of the need for peace and safety in the region.
A doctor at the Pahalgam hospital told PTI that 12 injured tourists were admitted there and the condition of all of them was stable.
Hours after the attack, PM Modi, who is on a visit to Saudi Arabia, spoke Union home minister Amit Shah and asked him to take all suitable measures. The PM also asked the home minister to visit the site.
Condemning the attack on tourists, PM Modi said those behind the heinous act will be brought to justice…they will not be spared!
I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. All possible assistance is being provided to those affected. Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice…they will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will get even stronger; PM Modi wrote on X.
