Jay Meyer Interview
In this in-depth interview with Jay Meyer, we explores how his cross-sector leadership spanning retail, banking, ICT, and talent development shapes his vision at Mlima Group. Jay shares how disciplined, customer-centric digital transformation can drive operational excellence, unlock financial inclusion, and empower SMEs, while remaining grounded in trust, compliance, and sustainability. Rooted in the African philosophy of Ubuntu, his approach connects technology with human potential focusing on youth empowerment, organizational change, and inclusive economic participation. The conversation highlights a leader who views digital transformation not as a systems upgrade, but as a people-first journey toward resilient, future-ready growth.
Scalable Digital Transformation
We started the interview, “How has your experience leading IT infrastructure in major retail organizations shaped your approach to digital transformation at Mlima Group?”
Jay Meyer replied, “My retail experience taught me the importance of balancing operational efficiency with customer-centric innovation. In retail, every system whether logistics, payments, or customer engagement must work seamlessly to meet consumer expectations. At Mlima Group, I carry this discipline into our digital transformation initiatives by ensuring technology solves real business problems, not just technical ones. Our focus is on building scalable architectures, strengthening IT risk management, and creating agile structures that help companies respond quickly to market shifts. This background enables us to guide retail clients through smoother digital transitions that enhance performance and customer experience simultaneously.”
Driving Secure Innovation
The Worlds Times: As someone with a strong background in financial services, how do you help banks and financial institutions unlock new digital opportunities?
Jay Meyer replied, “My experience in financial services taught me how critical reliability, compliance, and data protection are in banking environments. At Mlima Group, we help institutions modernize responsibly by aligning technology choices with regulatory expectations and customer trust. We introduce digital solutions that optimize service delivery, improve continuity, and enhance operational efficiency. Whether through cloud adoption, intelligent automation, or fintech partnerships, we guide executives to unlock economic participation and reach underserved communities. The goal is always to enable secure innovation, empowering banks to compete in a fast-evolving digital economy while protecting what matters most. My understanding of retail and banking is positioning us well to respond to the industry, as retailers are pivoting into the banking space.”
Digitally Empowering SMEs
The Worlds Times: How do you support SMEs in retail and financial services to become more digitally empowered and sustainable?
Jay Meyer replied, “SMEs often lack access to the digital tools, leadership guidance, and technical expertise needed to scale. We focus on closing this gap, sometimes exacerbated by Africa’s socioeconomic factors, by offering practical, affordable, and strategic digital solutions tailored to their growth stage. This includes ICT advisory, digital risk management, data strategy support, and operational transformation. I strongly believe SMEs are the backbone of economic participation, so our role is to empower them with the confidence and capability to compete with larger players. Through mentorship, training, and scalable ICT frameworks, we help SMEs build resilience, improve customer experience, and create long-term sustainability.”
Leadership as a Catalyst for Youth and Skills Development
The Worlds Times: How does your leadership philosophy support youth empowerment, especially in the education and skills development sector?
Jay Meyer replied, “I believe authentic leadership starts with enabling others to see their own potential. Youth empowerment requires more than training it requires creating pathways that connect learning to real economic opportunities. Through Mlima Cares (our CSI division), we collaborate with institutions, NGOs, and corporate partners to uplift unemployed youth by equipping them with digital skills and workplace readiness. My passion lies in helping young people navigate personal transformation, build confidence, and see technology as a tool for economic mobility. If we prepare youth for the digital world with purpose and mentorship, we don’t just develop skills, we build futures, we build legacies.”
Empowerment as a Business Philosophy
The Worlds Times: Mlima Group’s philosophy centers on “helping people reach their goals.” How does this mission, rooted in empowerment, sustainability, and the African principle of Ubuntu, guide your work across business, education, and community development?
Jay Meyer replied, “At Mlima Group, our philosophy is deeply grounded in Ubuntu, the belief that I am because we are. Helping people reach their goals means recognizing that individual success is inseparable from collective progress. In practice, this shapes how we design solutions that empower businesses, develop talent, and strengthen communities sustainably.
We focus on building capabilities, not dependencies whether through digital transformation for organizations, skills development for youth, or strategic support for SMEs. Sustainability, for us, is about creating long-term value that benefits people, institutions, and the broader economy. By aligning technology, leadership, and human potential, we ensure growth is inclusive and meaningful. When people are empowered with the right tools, mentorship, and opportunities, they don’t just achieve their goals they uplift others along the way. That is Ubuntu in action, and it sits at the heart of everything we do at Mlima Group.”
Future of Economic Participation
The Worlds Times: What is your view on the evolving relationship between technology, education, and economic participation in South Africa?
Jay Meyer replied, “Technology is no longer an optional skill it is the foundation of modern economic participation. Education systems must evolve to integrate digital literacy, critical thinking, and innovative problem-solving into every learning pathway. South Africa has abundant talent waiting to be unlocked, especially among our youth. By aligning educational content with industry needs whether retail analytics, financial technologies, or cybersecurity we create employable, adaptable, and future-ready individuals. Technology, when used intentionally, can bridge inequalities, enhance learning outcomes, and give young people the tools to build sustainable careers.”
Reinventing Retail through Strategy
The Worlds Times: Retail companies are under pressure to modernize quickly. What strategic advice do you offer executives navigating this transition?
Jay Meyer replied, “I encourage leaders to view digital transformation not as a technology project, but as a business reinvention journey. It starts with understanding customer behavior, improving internal processes, and reducing operational friction. My advice is to invest in data capabilities, strengthen cybersecurity, and adopt flexible cloud-based infrastructures. Equally important is cultivating a culture of collaboration, curiosity, and continuous learning across teams. When employees feel included in the transformation journey, they become drivers of innovation rather than passive participants. True modernization happens when strategy, people, and technology move in sync. Our strength is to ensure each project has Organizational Change Management embedded as a key deliverable; we don’t leave the starting blocks without it.”
Guiding Executives
Lastly we asked, “Your career spans retail, banking, ICT, and leadership development. How do you use this diverse background to guide senior executives today?”
“My cross-industry experience gives me a holistic perspective on how organizations operate from customer experience to risk management, operations, and leadership culture. When advising senior executives, I help them connect these elements in a way that unlocks opportunities rather than creating silos. Transformation requires both technical clarity and human alignment, and I bridge the two by focusing on strategic ICT decisions, resilience, and people-centered leadership. Ultimately, my goal is to help executives navigate complexity with confidence, empowering them to lead their organizations, and their people into a more inclusive and digitally enabled future.” Jay Meyer concluded
