We started the interview by asking, “Who is Sheba Simpson-Amsterdam, and what inspired her to establish I’m On Assignment, Inc.?”
Sheba Simpson-Amsterdam replied, “I am an educator, community advocate, and nonprofit founder dedicated to empowering underserved individuals through education, mentorship, and social justice initiatives. After decades of serving in New York City public schools, I witnessed firsthand how many families struggled with limited access to opportunities, guidance, and resources. These experiences motivated me to create I’m On Assignment, Inc., an organization committed to uplifting communities through advocacy, financial literacy, and personal development support. My inspiration comes from my belief that every person deserves a fair chance to succeed, regardless of background. My mission reflects a lifelong commitment to service, empowerment, and creating generational transformation.”

The Worlds Times: What is the mission of I’m On Assignment, Inc., and how does the organization serve communities?
Sheba Simpson-Amsterdam replied, “I’m On Assignment, Inc. exists to strengthen communities by promoting education, equity, empowerment, and holistic support. Our mission centers on providing individuals, especially youth, families, and marginalized groups with access to resources that build confidence, resilience, and long-term stability. We offer programs in advocacy, academic support, financial literacy, personal development, and community outreach. Through workshops, mentorship, events, and partnerships, we create safe spaces where people feel seen, supported, and uplifted. Each initiative is designed to guide participants toward self-improvement, leadership, and greater opportunity. Ultimately, we empower individuals to overcome challenges and pursue brighter futures with confidence and purpose.”

The Worlds Times: How has Sheba’s background in education influenced her leadership and community work?
Sheba Simpson-Amsterdam replied, “My career in education has profoundly shaped my leadership style and community mission. Working in New York City public schools exposed me to the academic, emotional, and social challenges that many students face daily. I have served as a special education teacher, New York Men Teach Mentor, and currently I work in New York City Public Schools. These roles required patience, empathy, cultural awareness, and strong problem-solving skills. They taught me the importance of listening, advocacy, and meeting people where they are. I lead with compassion while holding high expectations for growth and accountability. My educational background continues to inform my community work, helping me design programs that address real needs and foster meaningful impact.”

Sheba Simpson-Amsterdam replied, “I’m On Assignment, Inc. offers programs focused on personal development, educational empowerment, advocacy, and financial literacy. These initiatives include youth mentoring, leadership development workshops, family support sessions, career-readiness guidance, and community resource connections. We also create safe spaces for vulnerable groups, including young men of color and LGBTQIA+ youth, ensuring they receive support without judgment. Our financial literacy programs help participants understand budgeting, credit, savings, and long-term planning. Additionally, we engage in community outreach efforts that address everyday challenges faced by underserved families. Each initiative is crafted to uplift individuals, strengthen families, and build healthier, more informed, and empowered communities.”

My commitment to uplifting others especially marginalized individuals reflects my belief that every person deserves dignity, respect, and support. These values influence every decision I make and shape my mission to build communities where all people can thrive.”
Challenges & Growth
The Worlds Times: What challenges has Sheba faced while building her nonprofit, and how has she overcome them?
Sheba Simpson-Amsterdam replied, “Building a nonprofit has required me to navigate challenges such as limited funding, resource constraints, and the emotional weight of addressing deeply rooted community issues. Many of the individuals we serve face significant social and economic barriers, making consistent engagement both essential and demanding. I’ve also had to balance administrative responsibilities with hands-on support to ensure our programs remain impactful. I’ve overcome these challenges through perseverance, strong partnerships, and an unwavering belief in the mission. By listening to community needs and adapting our programs accordingly, I’ve been able to strengthen trust and participation. Resilience, strategic planning, and passion for service continue to help me turn obstacles into opportunities for growth and empowerment.”
A Long-Term Vision
Lastly we asked, “What is Sheba’s long-term vision for I’m On Assignment, Inc. and the communities it serves?”
“My long-term vision is to expand I’m On Assignment, Inc. into a nationwide force for education, empowerment, and social justice. I hope to create more accessible programs that strengthen families, uplift youth, and provide individuals with tools for long-term success. My vision includes establishing larger community centers, expanding financial literacy initiatives, and developing leadership pipelines for young people of color. I aim to build a sustainable organization that transforms generational outcomes by addressing both immediate and systemic challenges. Ultimately, I envision communities where everyone, regardless of background has opportunity, support, and a strong sense of purpose, belonging, and personal power.” Sheba Simpson-Amsterdam concluded
