The new Harry Potter series from HBO is meant to retell the books in longer seasons with a fresh cast. Until now, every role from the movies had been recast—except one.
It’s just been announced that Warwick Davis will return as Professor Filius Flitwick, the Charms teacher at Hogwarts. Davis played Flitwick in all eight Harry Potter films. He also played the goblin Griphook before, but that role has already been recast. Flitwick isn’t a major character in most storylines, but fans will likely enjoy seeing Davis reprise the part.
Davis has experience coming back to old roles—he starred again as Willow in Disney’s 2022 revival of the 1988 film. That show wasn’t very successful, but Harry Potter could be different.
For now, Davis is the only original movie actor returning for the series. Most roles were recast to give the show a new identity. On top of that, many of the original actors are now too old for their roles—or have passed away (including the actors who played both Dumbledores, McGonagall, Snape, and Hagrid). For the students especially, it wouldn’t make sense—Daniel Radcliffe is 36 now, while Harry started out at 11.
Along with Davis’s return, HBO also announced new casting for side characters:
-
Sirine Saba as Professor Pomona Sprout
-
Richard Durden as Professor Cuthbert Binns
-
Brid Brennan as Madam Poppy Pomfrey
-
Elijah Oshin as Dean Thomas
-
Finn Stephens as Vincent Crabbe
-
William Nash as Gregory Goyle
At this point, almost every named role from Philosopher’s Stone seems to be cast. The biggest mystery left is who will play Voldemort. Ralph Fiennes, who played him in the movies, once suggested Cillian Murphy for the part—but of course, that decision isn’t his to make.
Whoever is chosen for Voldemort or Dumbledore will likely be tied to the role for many years. That’s why fans have doubts about older actors, like John Lithgow (age 79), taking on such long-term commitments.
