Fans have been hoping for a while that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the MCU would return to his roots — not fighting in space or dealing with the multiverse, but being the friendly neighborhood hero in New York, working with other local heroes.

Now, it looks like that’s finally happening with a new Spider-Man story called Brand New Day, which is being described as a “reset” for the character.

There have been clues. One big sign was that Spider-Man won’t be in Avengers: Doomsday, even though he’s one of Marvel’s biggest heroes. Tom Holland’s name didn’t appear during the famous “chair name” reveal stream. He might have a small cameo, but he won’t be a main character.

Another big surprise was that Jon Bernthal’s Punisher will be part of Brand New Day. The Punisher is a classic street-level hero from New York, which fits the new direction.

Now, Tom Holland has confirmed more details in an interview with Flip Your Wig:

“We had a lot of limits during the last movie because of COVID… but now we’re going back to old-school filmmaking and shooting on real streets. We’re planning a big action scene using the streets of Glasgow.”

So yes — Spider-Man is heading back to the streets.

There were reports that Tom Holland was in Scotland filming The Odyssey, a movie by director Christopher Nolan. But it turns out he was actually there for the new Spider-Man movie. Filmmakers often use Glasgow to look like New York City because it’s easier to film there than in the real NYC.

The last Spider-Man movies, like No Way Home and Multiverse of Madness, focused a lot on magic and alternate universes. Fans enjoyed seeing Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield return, but it’s nice to see the story going back to a more down-to-earth version of Spider-Man. The appearance of The Punisher in this film also hints that other Marvel characters like Daredevil or Jessica Jones might show up. Joseph Quinn, who will play Johnny Storm in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie, has already said he’d like to act with Holland’s Spider-Man—and in the comics, their characters have teamed up many times.

That said, Spider-Man being part of big, epic stories has worked well too. No Way Home made nearly $2 billion, and his scene in Avengers: Infinity War (“Mr. Stark, I don’t feel so good”) was unforgettable. Still, this new movie feels like a fresh start. We know Michelle and Ned will return—but now with The Punisher involved and real-world action scenes, it’s sounding exciting.
