Elon Musk has become the first person in history to be worth more than $800 billion. This happened after his space company, SpaceX, bought his artificial intelligence and social media company, xAI. According to Forbes, the deal increased Musk’s wealth by about $84 billion, bringing his total net worth to a record $852 billion.

The deal values the combined company at about $1.25 trillion. Before the merger, SpaceX was already extremely valuable. In December, a private investment deal valued SpaceX at $800 billion. At that time, Musk owned about 42% of the company, which was worth around $336 billion. He also owned about 49% of xAI, which was valued at $250 billion earlier this month. His share of xAI alone was worth about $122 billion.

After SpaceX acquired xAI, the new combined company was valued with SpaceX at $1 trillion and xAI at $250 billion. Forbes now estimates that Musk owns about 43% of the combined company, worth roughly $542 billion. This makes SpaceX by far Musk’s most valuable asset.

Musk also owns a large share of Tesla. He holds about 12% of Tesla, which is currently worth around $178 billion. In addition, he has Tesla stock options worth another $124 billion. These numbers do not include a massive future pay package approved by Tesla shareholders in November. If Tesla meets ambitious long-term goals—such as increasing its market value more than eight times over the next 10 years—Musk could receive stock worth up to $1 trillion before taxes.

This is not the first time Musk has merged his own companies. In March last year, he combined xAI with his social media platform X, previously known as Twitter. That deal valued xAI at $80 billion and X at $33 billion, close to what Musk paid for Twitter in 2022. Because Musk acted as both the buyer and seller in these deals, some people have questioned whether the valuations are accurate. However, now that these companies are part of SpaceX, and with a SpaceX IPO expected later this year, they will face closer public and market scrutiny.

In just four months, Musk has reached four major wealth milestones. In October, he became the first person worth $500 billion, helped by a rise in Tesla’s stock after he stepped away from his role in President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency to focus more on Tesla. In mid-December, he crossed $600 billion when SpaceX’s valuation doubled from $400 billion in August to $800 billion. Just days later, he hit $700 billion after a court decision restored his Tesla stock options.

Musk is now far ahead of the world’s second-richest person, Google co-founder Larry Page, who is worth about $281 billion. Musk is $578 billion richer than Page, putting him closer than ever to becoming the world’s first trillionaire.
