As someone who loves the sun but also battles with oily skin and the occasional breakout, I’ve learned that transitioning your skincare routine from winter to summer is essential. The thick creams and heavy serums that keep skin hydrated during colder months can suddenly feel like a greasy layer once the temperature rises. This summer, I made a few key changes to my skincare regimen—and the results have been game-changing. Here’s how I updated my routine and why it made such a difference.

1. Switching to a Gel Cleanser

During winter, I use a cream-based cleanser to combat dryness. But in summer, sweat and oil production increase, so I switched to a gentle gel cleanser with salicylic acid. This not only removes excess oil but also helps prevent clogged pores and breakouts. I use it twice a day—once in the morning to wash off nighttime sweat and once at night to remove sunscreen and pollution from the day.

2. Ditching the Heavy Moisturizer

My winter moisturizer was thick and creamy, which worked well for dry, flaky skin. But come June, it felt too suffocating. I opted for an oil-free, lightweight gel moisturizer that absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave any residue. It keeps my skin hydrated without making it shiny or sticky.

3. Adding a Vitamin C Serum

With more time spent outdoors, sun protection became even more critical. Alongside SPF, I incorporated a vitamin C serum into my morning routine. Vitamin C helps brighten the skin, even out tone, and protect against environmental damage. It also pairs well with sunscreen to enhance UV protection. I noticed fewer dark spots and a more radiant complexion after just a few weeks.

4. Upgrading to a Broad-Spectrum SPF 50

Sunscreen is non-negotiable, but during the winter, I often relied on moisturizers with SPF 30. For summer, I upgraded to a dedicated SPF 50 sunscreen that’s broad-spectrum and water-resistant. I chose one with a matte finish, so it doubles as a primer under makeup. I also got into the habit of reapplying it every two hours when I’m outdoors, something I used to neglect.

5. Using a Clay Mask Weekly

To combat summer congestion and excess oil, I added a weekly clay mask into my routine. It helps to detoxify the skin, shrink pores, and control oil without over-drying. I typically use it mid-week when my skin starts to feel grimy or looks dull. It’s a small addition, but it’s helped maintain a clearer, more balanced complexion.

6. Drinking More Water and Eating Lighter

While not strictly part of my skincare routine, staying hydrated and eating lighter foods has had a noticeable impact. Summer fruits and water-rich vegetables have helped my skin look plumper and healthier. I also reduced my intake of dairy and sugar, which I suspect were contributing to occasional breakouts.
