A Holistic Path to Psychological Healing

We started the interview by asking, “How did your academic journey in sociology and family counselling shape your perspective as a clinical psychologist?”

Prof.Dr.Kursat replied –“My academic journey began with an undergraduate degree in Sociology, which gave me a strong foundation in understanding how social systems influence human behaviour. This perspective helped me view psychological issues not only as individual struggles but as deeply connected to family dynamics, culture, and societal norms.

My first Master’s in Family Counselling allowed me to explore these ideas further, culminating in my thesis titled “The Influence of the Family on Marriage Choices.” This research deepened my understanding of how family structures, cultural traditions, and emotional bonds shape critical life decisions.

To specialize clinically, I pursued a second Master’s in Clinical Psychology, where I focused my thesis on “Bipolar Disorder.” This work allowed me to examine the complex emotional and cognitive patterns associated with mood disorders and enriched my therapeutic approach.

I later earned my doctorate in Clinical Psychology, with a dissertation titled “Psychological Factors of Suicide.” Building on that, I was awarded the prestigious Doctorate of Letters in Social Psychology from St. Clements University. Following this, I was appointed Associate Professor and then promoted to Professor of Psychology at St. Clements University, where I continue to serve as a faculty member.

My education and research have shaped the way I support clients across Turkey both in person in Izmir and online—with a combination of sociological insight, psychological depth, and practical strategies for healing.”

Exploring the Depths of Mood Disorders and Suicide Psychology

The Worlds Times –“Your academic work spans diverse areas—from bipolar disorder to suicide psychology. What drives your interest in such complex mental health issues?

Prof.Dr.Kursat replied –Throughout my academic life, I’ve been drawn to topics that are often misunderstood or stigmatized—particularly mood disorders and suicide. These are profound human struggles, and I felt a deep responsibility to explore them with both academic rigor and compassion.

During my Clinical Psychology Master’s, my research on Bipolar Disorder opened my eyes to the emotional extremes clients face, from manic highs to depressive lows. It emphasized the importance of tailored therapeutic strategies that address both biological and psychosocial components.

Later, my doctoral dissertation on “Psychological Factors of Suicide” at Northwest University enabled me to investigate the internal experiences—trauma, cognitive distortions, loss of meaning—that often underlies suicidal ideation.

These studies changed me not only as a clinician but as a human being. They reinforced my belief that empathy, early intervention, and de-stigmatizing mental health are essential for real change. I strive to translate academic research into therapeutic action and public education to help people feel seen and supported.”

Healing Trauma Through EMDR and Reflexology

The Worlds Times – How do your EMDR and reflexology certifications complement your clinical psychological practice?

Prof.Dr.Kursat replied –“I believe in a multidisciplinary approach to healing. My training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which I completed in England, has been instrumental in helping clients process trauma without traumatization. It allows for emotional desensitization and cognitive restructuring in a safe, guided manner especially effective for PTSD and childhood trauma.

Reflexology, on the other hand, complements this work by targeting the physical manifestations of psychological stress. By applying pressure to reflex points, I help clients achieve physical relaxation and nervous system balance. This method is particularly useful for those suffering from psychosomatic symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, or anxiety-related tension.

Additionally, my certifications in Anatomy, Physiology, Marriage and Relationship Therapy, and Child Development allow me to offer an integrative and individualized treatment plan that addresses the whole person—mind, body, and emotional well-being.”

Shaping Psychology Through Editorial Leadership”

The Worlds TimesYou hold key editorial roles in several psychology journals. How does this influence your academic work and contributions?

Prof.Dr.Kursat replied –“As Editorial Chairman of the Ankara Education and Research Social Sciences Journal, Chairman of the Turkish Journal of Psychology and Psychiatry Medicine, and Vice Chairman of the Istanbul Medi Social Education and Research Health/Medical Sciences Journal, I engage deeply with current academic discourse in psychology.

These roles keep me at the forefront of global psychological research. I regularly evaluate studies for methodological quality, ethical compliance, and scientific relevance. They also provide opportunities to mentor early-career researchers, particularly from underrepresented academic communities in Turkey and developing countries.

As an ULAKBİM-certified editor, I contribute to peer review, research consultancy, and academic evaluation. Through these platforms, I aim to elevate the standards of psychological science and ensure culturally informed scholarship reaches a global audience.”

Focused on Mental Health and Relationship Wellness

The Worlds TimesCould you elaborate on your clinical expertise, especially in areas like depression, OCD, and relationship therapy?

Prof.Dr.Kursat replied –“I work extensively with clients struggling with depression, OCD, and relationship issues. For depression, I use a blended approach of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic techniques to identify root causes, challenge negative thought patterns, and build emotional resilience. When trauma is involved, EMDR helps access and heal deeper emotional wounds.

In treating OCD, I implement Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) a proven technique that helps clients resists compulsions while gradually reducing the anxiety associated with obsessive thoughts.

Relationship therapy draws from my foundation in Family Counselling. I focus on identifying communication blocks, resolving unmet emotional needs, and rebuilding trust whether in romantic, parental, or family contexts.

I also collaborate with physicians to ensure that psychological interventions are informed by medical insights when necessary. My aim is always to treat the person as a whole, not just the symptom.”

Spreading Awareness Through the Written Word

The Worlds Times – You’ve written several books on topics ranging from suicide to child development. What role do these publications play in your mission as a psychologist and educator?

Prof.Dr.Kursat replied –“My books are an extension of my clinical and academic mission—to educate, raise awareness, and reduce stigma. Each book translates psychological theory into practical knowledge for diverse audiences.

For example, “Psychological Factors of Suicide” is widely used in therapeutic training and academic curricula. “Your Child Is Developing and Changing” and “The Child in Us” guide both parents and therapists through the stages of emotional and cognitive development.

Books like “Crime and Crime”, “Family Structure and Crime Relationship”, and “Is Society Guilty?” bridge my sociological foundation with my psychological expertise, encouraging critical thinking around justice and societal norms.

Meanwhile, “The Trap of Desire: Sexual Impulse and Betrayal” delves into sensitive relational dynamics, helping readers understand the psychology behind betrayal and impulsivity.

All my publications aim to make psychological knowledge accessible, evidence-based, and socially relevant.”

Continuous Learning, Constant Growth

The Worlds Times – What is your core philosophy when it comes to lifelong learning and staying updated in your field?

Prof.Dr.Kursat replied –“Lifelong learning is the backbone of my career. Psychology is a dynamic field new research, tools, and treatment modalities emerge constantly. I regularly attend international conferences, pursue advanced certifications, and participate in online research communities to stay informed.

Digital tools have expanded access to knowledge and allowed me to maintain an active role in both clinical practice and academic development across borders. Whether it’s introducing new assessment models or adapting to virtual therapy environments, I continuously evolve my approach.

Humility is central to my philosophy—the awareness that learning never ends. Every therapy session, academic collaboration, or editorial review presents a chance to grow. This commitment to on-going learning enables me to offer the highest standard of care and scholarship.”

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Psychologists

Lastly we asked, – “Based on your vast academic journey and clinical experience, what advice would you give to aspiring psychologists and those beginning their professional paths in mental health?”

“My most sincere advice is to remain curious, compassionate, and committed to lifelong learning– Psychology is not just a profession—it’s a responsibility that demands intellectual discipline and emotional intelligence.

Invest in interdisciplinary learning. Understanding sociology, neuroscience, and even complementary therapies can enrich your ability to serve clients holistically. Most importantly, engage in your own healing and self-reflection. Only then can you truly hold space for others. Be present, listen deeply, and never underestimate the impact of empathy. The most transformative healing often begins with a safe space and an open heart. If you approach the field with integrity and purpose, you’ll not only change lives you’ll be changed yourself.” Prof.Dr.Kursat concluded
