Some of the best wine experts share their favorite white wines to help you discover new flavors beyond popular choices like Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio.
National White Wine Day is on Monday, August 4. With white wine becoming more popular in recent years, it’s a great time to try something new and raise a glass.
Last summer, the research company NIQ reported that white wine was the only type of wine to grow in sales compared to the year before. This growth is expected to continue, with experts predicting a 5.3% increase each year until the end of 2025.
Since 2000, both the demand and production of white wine have gone up. The International Organization of Vine and Wine said that in 2021, white wine production grew 13% compared to its lowest point in 2002.
But many people still only drink a few popular types like Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, or Pinot Grigio. In reality, there are hundreds of white wine types that are less known but worth trying.
Calvin Barnett, a wine expert from Perilla in Chicago, says: “The world of white wine is big and exciting. Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay are popular, but wines like Carricante, Vermentino, Roussanne, and Palomino are also great and can offer similar but more interesting flavors.”
So instead of choosing your usual wine this National White Wine Day, why not explore something new? Below are 8 unique white wines, chosen by two top sommeliers, that might surprise and delight you.
8 Unique White Wines to Try
1. 2022 IDDA Etna Bianco
Calvin Barnett recommends this wine made from Carricante grapes in Sicily. It has light flavors of citrus, apricot, lemongrass, and sea salt. It’s fresh and leaves you wanting another sip.
2. Benanti Etna Bianco Carricante
Phillip Dunn, another wine expert, suggests this version of Carricante. Made by one of the top producers on Mount Etna, it reflects the volcanic soil and has a smooth, long-lasting flavor.
3. 2022 Sylvain Pataille Aligoté
Dunn also recommends this lesser-known white grape from Burgundy, France. Thanks to winemakers like Sylvain Pataille, Aligoté is making a comeback. It has bright citrus and floral flavors and is a great alternative to Sancerre.
2024 Alois Lageder ‘Misto Mare’ Blanco, Vigneti delle Dolomite
This is a white wine from northern Italy, made using biodynamic farming. It’s a mix of 14 different white and red grapes that are fermented together. The result is a wine with layers of smells and flavors. Expect hints of citrus peel, white flowers, and fresh mountain herbs.
2023 Pedro Méndez Albariño, Rias Baixas
Albariño is a white grape from northwestern Spain. This wine is fresh, crisp, and has nice texture, making it great with food. It has bright flavors of citrus and tropical fruits, along with a salty, mineral touch. Wine expert Barnett says it’s excellent for its price.
2022 Hiedler ‘Thal’ Grüner Veltliner, Ried, Kamptal
Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s most popular white grape. This wine is light to medium in body and dry. It has juicy flavors of apricot, nectarine, and peach, with fresh lemon and savory herbs to balance it out.
2022 Rumor Cotes de Provence White
This wine is made from Rolle, a grape also known as Vermentino in Italy. While often used in rosé, here it’s used alone to create a smooth, fruity white wine. It tastes of ripe stone fruits like peach, with floral notes and bright acidity. It goes well with salads and light dishes.
2023 Renaissance ‘Cote de l’Epee’ Sancerre
Sancerre is a region in France known for its Sauvignon Blanc. This version is more citrusy and mineral than versions from other parts of the world. It’s clean, sharp, and ends with a slightly salty taste. Dunn describes it as pure and elegant.
