China has warned that a proposed ban on TikTok would “come back to bite” the US, as lawmakers approved a bill that could lead to the app being banned.

A bill in the House of Representatives wants the Chinese-owned app to cut ties with China or stop working in the US.

US leaders worry about TikTok’s safety.

The people who own TikTok keep saying it’s not dangerous.

On Wednesday, members of the US House of Representatives agreed on a bill. It says the Chinese parent company of TikTok has to sell its US part.

The bill is called the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. It has to go to the Senate. We don’t know if they will agree to it.

If they do, President Joe Biden will sign it.

The Trump administration’s efforts to ban TikTok in 2020 were met with legal challenges and regulatory hurdles, ultimately leading to a temporary reprieve for the app. However, the issue has resurfaced under the Biden administration, with policymakers revisiting the possibility of imposing restrictions on TikTok and other Chinese-owned technology companies operating in the US.

Before the vote, a Chinese spokesperson, Wang Wenbin, said the US is “pressuring TikTok” even though they didn’t find proof it’s unsafe.

Wang said, “This bullying will hurt the US in the end.”

Chinese media didn’t like the move either. They made fun of the US for trying to ban the app.

TikTok is like other social media, banned in China. Chinese people use a similar app called Duoyin, but it’s only in China and the government watches it.

TikTok is owned by a company in Beijing, registered in the Cayman Islands, called Byte Dance.

If the US bill passes, ByteDance has to sell TikTok in six months or it can’t be in US app stores or websites.

Last week, TikTok asked its American users to call their leaders and stop the bill. The House China Select Committee didn’t like that and told TikTok to stop trying to use Americans for China’s benefit.

TikTok says it’s not linked to China’s government and moved its US data to the US.

Former President Donald Trump wanted to ban TikTok in 2020, but now he doesn’t because he thinks it would help Facebook too much.
